Voices from the margins
The Hesje CPA Knowledge Centre podcast discusses equity, inclusion, and racism in Canada
In June 2021, the CPA Education Foundation and the Hesje CPA Knowledge Centre had prepared to mark National Indigenous History Month with a special three-part Straight From the CPA’s Mouth podcast series exploring racism in Canada. However, shortly after these episodes were recorded, a mass gravesite containing the remains of Indigenous children was found at a former residential school in Kamloops, B.C. Since then, many more sites have been, and will likely continue to be, discovered.
Not only are these discoveries a tragic reminder of some of the most horrifying parts of Canadian history, they are also a reminder that conversations about equity, diversity, and inclusion belong at the forefront of reconciliation and healing. As the CPA profession continues to grow, the Foundation will continue to engage in meaningful conversations about uncomfortable or complicated subjects.
This three part special—“Talking about racism, diversity, and inclusion”—features Robert Andrews CPA, CMA, an Indigenous Albertan and passionate mentor, educator, and leader who has worked hard to build stronger ties between the CPA profession and Indigenous students in Alberta. In the podcast episodes, Robert dives into a variety of pertinent topics, including intergenerational trauma, restorative justice, moving towards healing and reconciliation, and the path towards equity in our country. You can listen to this important conversation on the Hesje CPA Knowledge Centre website or wherever you normally get your podcasts.
The CPA Education Foundation’s Hesje CPA Knowledge Centre was established thanks to a generous gift from Brian Hesje FCPA, FCA, an accomplished Alberta business leader and community builder. The Hesje Centre, which was established in March 2019, is a virtual hub of resources and materials featuring Alberta CPAs sharing their unique perspectives and vast expertise on a wide range of topics and issues.
