“Steering my own course was crucial. I wanted to forge my own path,” Sheena Sy says with a smile.

Despite her parents’ wishes—her mom pushing for a CPA career and her dad dreaming of her as a doctor—Sheena followed her heart to economics and even conquered the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Level One exam. “There’s something empowering about choosing your own journey,” she says.

After earning her stripes in the fund accounting and investment world, Sheena realized her true calling actually was in accounting. This realization wasn’t just a return to her roots but a step toward a grander vision— achieving the CPA designation, much to her mother’s delight.

Her academic path wasn’t straightforward, but each step has strengthened her resolve. “Taking the CFA Level One instead of jumping straight into accounting was a detour that brought me knowledge, experience, and clarity,” she says.

Now committed to pursuing her CPA designation, Sheena is certain of her path: “Every turn has deepened my passion for accounting.”

Sheena has also embraced her role as a peer mentor at the University of Lethbridge’s Calgary campus. She is deeply committed to guiding international students and her peers, actively encouraging them to participate in a variety of campus events, including the CPA Alberta PRO Dinner, casual coffee chats, and a taco dinner night.

Her dedication to creating supportive and engaging connections shines as she helps fellow students navigate both academic and social landscapes. “It’s not just about helping [other students] academically but making their experience here as rich and warm as possible,” Sheena says. “I encourage students to build authentic relationships and to be intentional in advocating for yourself and other people.”

Q&A with Sheena

How do you strive to be a role model for other students on campus?

I strive to lead by example through both academic excellence and active participation. While maintaining a stellar GPA is one aspect, I also prioritize being a vocal presence in class, encouraging my peers to develop their communication skills. In a field like accounting, often seen as a behind-the-scenes profession, I believe evolving to meet the industry’s dynamic demands—like offering value-added advice—is crucial. By emphasizing the importance of strong communication as a foundation for success in this profession, I hope to inspire others to embrace these skills, helping them stand out in an ever-evolving profession.

What achievement or contribution are you most proud of so far?

One of my proudest achievements has been stepping beyond the traditional boundaries of accounting to embrace high-impact, multifaceted responsibilities that drive organizational success. I thrive when I’m entrusted with challenges that extend beyond my defined role because it allows me to contribute meaningfully to my organization’s goals.

For example, I played a key role in the selection of a new investment management software. This required me to balance technical evaluation with stakeholder collaboration, ensuring the solution aligned with both operational needs and strategic objectives. Additionally, I served as the Quality Assurance Secretariat, where I ensured adherence to rigorous standards while managing my accounting duties. Leading internal and ISO audits further showcased my ability to work seamlessly with cross-functional teams across all levels of the organization.

These experiences have sharpened my leadership, adaptability, and problem-solving skills, reinforcing my ability to deliver value in dynamic and complex environments.

What piece of advice or feedback has been most meaningful or impactful for you?

The best advice I’ve ever received is to build authentic relationships and be intentional in advocating for yourself and others. This resonates deeply with me, as I believe growth stems from fostering meaningful connections and using one’s platform to uplift others. It’s not about giving back because you’ve gained something; it’s about leveraging the opportunities you’re fortunate to have to make a positive impact. This philosophy has shaped how I approach mentorship, teamwork, and leadership, guiding me to create meaningful connections and foster a culture of collaboration and growth.
