More than a job
Finding meaningful work and choosing a career path as a future CPA
As a future CPA, how do you start your career so it aligns with your skills, personality, interests, and values? With so many options in finance, accounting, and business, it can be challenging to find a meaningful fit! Here are a few key questions to guide your decisions and set yourself up for long-term success.
How do I know what I want to do for the rest of my life? You don’t.
It’s unlikely you’ll do one thing forever! The future of work is dynamic. You and your career can evolve over time. Know that you can change roles many times throughout your career as your values, interests, and skills change. As you consider the first role in your career, ask yourself: What energizes me? What are my strengths? What truly interests me?
How do I know what truly interests me? Audit yourself.
Do you enjoy working with numbers, solving problems, or helping businesses with financial decisions? Are you analytical, detail-oriented, or skilled at communicating complex information? Self-assessment (also known as self-auditing!) is key to choosing your path. If you’re unsure, work with a career adviser— they can help clarify your skills, strengths, values, and interests.
How do I find a workplace that aligns with my values and skills? Research— both yourself and the organization.
Workplace culture significantly impacts career satisfaction. Ask yourself: What’s important to me? Does this company reflect those values? Research an organization’s mission, values, and employee testimonials. Attend career fairs, connect with professionals on LinkedIn, speak with alumni, and try internships, volunteering, or job-shadowing to explore different firms and industries.
How can I thrive in my career? Focus on growth and adaptability.
Be a lifelong learner. Thriving means excelling in your current role while staying open to learning and growth opportunities. Manage your career potential by mastering new software, staying informed on industry trends, and developing leadership abilities. Building strong relationships is also key—these connections will support your growth. Stay curious, as the accounting profession is evolving with technology and new business challenges.
By taking these steps, you’ll find a career that aligns with your personal values and professional goals, setting you up for long-term fulfillment as a CPA.
