What have you been up to the last 10 years? 

The past decade has been an amazing journey, both professionally and personally! After graduating from the University of Lethbridge, I began my career with KPMG, where I had the incredible opportunity to gain hands-on experience in public accounting while earning my CPA designation.  

A few years later, I transitioned into an industry role, where I’ve been able to expand my focus beyond accounting into strategic planning and supporting plant expansion initiatives.  

On the personal side, I recently married, and my husband and I share our lives with an adorable dog who loves joining us for all our outdoor adventures! 

How did being a CPA Campus Ambassador influence where you are today? 

Being a CPA Campus Ambassador during such an exciting time—right when the accounting profession was unifying and the new CPA program was launching—had a significant impact on my journey.  

It gave me early insights into the program, prepared me for what to expect after graduation, and positioned me as a go-to resource for my classmates on what was ahead. Looking back, I realize this role naturally put me in a leadership position within my peer group, even if I didn’t fully realize it at the time. It also allowed me to grow my network, connecting with mentors, peers, and future colleagues. Those relationships and experiences have been invaluable in shaping my career path and opening doors to opportunities I may not have otherwise found.

Can you tell us about your current role? 

I’m the General Manager of Finance at Precon, an Alberta-based manufacturing company specializing in engineered precast concrete structures. This includes everything from the structures under the manhole covers on local streets to irrigation canals and even water management projects as far away as Arizona.  

In this dynamic role, I leverage my CPA skills to combine technical accounting expertise with strategic planning, leadership, and IT systems improvements. I also play a role in guiding Precon’s growth, supporting expansion and automation initiatives to help the company stay at the forefront of our evolving industry. 

Do you have any advice for future CPAs? 

My advice to future CPAs is to be proactive and open-minded about the possibilities in this field! While technical expertise is essential, employers today are also looking for well-rounded leaders who can communicate effectively, work collaboratively, and tackle complex challenges. I encourage you to develop leadership and problem-solving skills alongside your accounting knowledge.  

Don’t underestimate the importance of building your network too. Finding a career path that truly fits you often comes down to a blend of skills, relationships, and a readiness to seize opportunities as they come. Remember, your CPA skills can take you in countless directions!
